I downloaded the demo of conan 3 days ago not expecting much, but it was fun enough to warrant a rent. So I rented it Saturday and decided to try to play all the way through the game, to do this I also needed to select easy mode and have coffee ready.
I started playing saturday night, and to my joy I actually enjoyed my playing time, it’s a typical hack and slash, with the typical giant bosses to be killed in gruesome ways like going inside a giant squid, stabbing it’s brain and then coming out through its eye, or dropping large stones on a dragon via elaborate yet well places construction equipment. it even had naked maidens places throughout the game that you must free, and of course they declare such things like “ohh my clothes, where did my clothes go!” to “I didn’t expect my savior to be so strong”. I was also very pleased to notice that I was already have way through the game by the time I quit playing on Saturday.
Then Sunday came along and I was having so much fun saturday that I went right back to playing conan without even watching football. For shame.
Sunday was more of the same hack and slash, but I began noticing an array of bugs that would haunt me the rest of my playing time, the controls often get stuck with the camera, meaning if I am running straight but want to turn right, I keep going straight even while pushing right on the controls. This was very frustrating because it caused me to not complete a few of my timed tasks. Also one of the more frustrating things is the environment itself, although at first when things come falling and you have to jump its pretty simple and easily made, but later on in levels, and close to the end boss, I died no less then 34 times in a row trying to make it across a bridge that was collapsing, that was not fun by any means. The cell shading graphics they used, although usually not to bad, really began to look to cartoonish towards the end, ruining the games atmosphere, and although I had the difficulty level on easy, the end boss seemed to be on hard, and if it wasn’t I couldn’t imagine it being any fun at all, because even on easy it was very very difficult, as I was constantly stunned many times resulting in an easy death and it took me 2 hours to kill the end boss.
We won’t talk about story either, because, well…there isn’t one, it tries but not very hard and at the end they just give up. But with all the problems I just went through, I still enjoyed the game as a hack and slash, and at least it was short, which is a bonus for a lot of us casual gamers who don’t like a game to last 20 + hours. So go rent it, enjoy it a bit, but go ahead and take it back when you run into these issues, as it takes away a lot of the fun of the game and makes you end the game on a bad note.
